Pondering

So, I can't be the only one who experiences this. When I purchase a flowy top that is made for sizes S-L, it fits me so much better than about 85% of plus size tops (of any style). Cheap Monday makes my favorite tops and Betsey's nighties (some of which ARE plus size, but more like juniors plus) are superb. I also recently added wishlists on my blog for some of good "straight" size shops not only to keep track of my favorites, but to also demonstrate the type of clothing that works* for all bodies.

Now, some of my favorite pieces come from brands that I have the potential to sell at my store, Domino Dollhouse. They carry oversized crop tops, flowy blouses, and billowing dresses that not only could work for plus sizes, I've proved it by trying them on. My point is to ask: would you appreciate a plus size store that carried standard sizes that were PRE-TESTED to work for larger bodies? I'd love to be able to carry a variety of edge-y clothing, but there just isn't the selection out there for sizes 1X-4X. What are your thoughts?

*I define works as can physically get on the body, not what looks "flattering" in some narrow minded sense of the word. I do not choose to wear body con, but that doesn't mean everyone else can't. And also: maybe some day I will.

  1. Yes, I find myself at a size 22/24 fitting into lots of M-XXL depending on the fabric and cut. I can't wait until next week, when I get my play money... I'm definitely hitting up Domino Dollhouse. So many goodies over there!

  2. Awesome! So, if you saw items on a plus model, with plus friendly measurements, but listed at a size S, M, or L you'd be totally down? I know it'd be a bit confusing at first, but hopefully with pictures, measurements, and explanation...hopefully!

  3. I would buy....I bought some pieces from a thrift shop that was sized medium. I love off the shoulder tops, and oversized tops.

  4. I most certainly would be happy to see such a thing! I tried on a sweater from Old Navy last year and the small was huge on me! So if I knew that it had been tested for a curvier frame (hello, my breasts need coverage!) I would sure as shootin' check it out! Actually, I'm off to look at your site right now!

  5. I would LOVE that kind of information from a store. I'm always more into buying when things like stretch, bust area, shoulders etc are talked about as to fit. That is info I want.

  6. I would. I mean I agree with you, I often buy oversized tops or dresses at H&M that fit really good. And If I see how things look like on a plus size model, and I feel like it is the way I would like to wear things, I would of cause buy them, no meter what is said on the sizetag.

Domino Dollhouse always give good sizing information and if the wide and length of a top are given everyone can imagine better how it would work on them.

  7. I'd do it! I think part of the reason I don't is time & energy... like I don't have the time to scour through F21 for the standard size stuff that'd fit my plus-size bod... and then most of their plus sized stuff is just billowing huge.

  8. Shannon - ME too! If I can have the opportunity to preview the goods and display them, they WHY NOT sell them, right? I just know sizing confusion on my site has always been the #1 issue.

Katrin - Thanks...I agree! Thanks for the kinds words =)

Ashe - I don't mind doing the legwork as long as it's what my dolls want! I just didn't want anyone to see "small" and not even bother with the size chart...I think I can solve that with images. I often here F21 isn't big enough, and that's my experience too...where is the billowing huge? Hahaha...I want some of THAT!

Thanks all for the comments and help, chubblettes!

  9. Yeah, absolutely! However, it'd need to be modelled on a fat person, rather than a mannequin, so we can see how it fits.

  10. Frances - yes, I totally agree! For this to come across is has to be on a physical body, not my imaginary, headless friend =)

  11. Yes, yes, yes! I'm a firm believer in not looking at clothing sizes. With the oversized fashion that is in style at the moment, it means I can often fit into Mediums! I think it would be great for a plus size store to carry straight sized clothing that fits plus sizes!

  12. Yes! Maybe having a 'plus-friendly' size chart with measurements of the garments so that people aren't put off by, (like you said) the "S,M,L" stigma!

  13. Natalie - Totally! I figure if it fits and it's cute, I should find a way to carry it =)

Charmaine - All items on my site have individual size charts, it's just a matter of making sure people look at them. It's trickier than you'd imagine!

  14. This is a great idea. The plus size woman all too often fears straight sizes, when in actuality it may fit. I think with your straight size knowledge this would be a great market for you. I also want you to start carrying Jeffrey Campbell shoes...k? ;)

  15. I want rad items; I don't care what they are originally intended for as long as they look good on me. I own an Obey tunic originally meant for a medium and it fits me perfectly. Like I wish there was a place that said "ok this will fit you." So the guessing isn't there. I once bought a cheap Monday dress on a guess.. unfortunately it didn't fit me. My co-worker Alicia was stoked, for she now owns it, but eh.

  16. I stay away from shopping some stores for tops. I have a easy time finding pants in the non-plus size stores but since my boobs are in the way - most things look off on me. I bought some basic tees from Target and had to go up to a 2x - though I am like a 14/16....

  17. I have really narrow shoulders so yeah flowing smaller size stuff works better on me than a large size that falls off the shoulders!

I'd always look at the size chart because sizing is so erratic.
