Anyone who's close to me knows that I have quite a thing (fashionably, emotionally, sexually, etc) for Lisbeth Salander. Particularly Noomi Rapace, but after seeing the American version this weekend it is clear to me that the character holds a lot of the charm. It's no secret that I tend to dress a bit darker and these movies provide endless fashion inspiration for me. It can be quite challenging to be plus size and dress fashionably, but chic, non-costume-y goth clothing seems like the unattainable to most. However, with amazing inspiration and dedicated searching, it's definitely not impossible. Here are some looks I pulled together to help you get Lisbeth's style in plus sizes. Please note: a huge part of her style is her shaved head and piercings. It is challenging to get the full affect without having a head to toe edge-y style, but these outfits should pull you farther and farther into the dark side.

OOTD: White + Black

Alright, chubblettes! It's a new year and I promised myself I'd return to the world of blogging with more consistency. Thus, I present the first OOTD of 2012. I got this AMAZING white vintage kaftan via Re/Dress NYC (thanks, Deb!!) and I've been meaning to dye it grey or black. I love it so much that I couldn't wait for me to get my act together and decided to pair with the black/white stripe bra from Lane Bryant and wear it backwards for a full sheer effect. I also gave in and selected this jacket from my Domino Dollhouse collection to wear with it for added texture and edge. Hopefully, this will kick off a year of wonderful new posts here on Chubble Bubble!

Re/Dress NYC Indie+ and Closing Weekend

I can't believe it's been over a month since I arrived in NYC for the Re/Dress Indie+ event. To be a part of such an amazing event as a designer is something I couldn't have fathomed a year ago. Not only was I asked to come and vend, but I also put on my first fashion show as Domino Dollhouse. The weekend was bittersweet, as while it was super exciting and thrilling for me and my shop, Re/Dress was closing down. It was the catalyst, however, to meeting so many amazing, inspiring people. I want to give special thanks to Deb and her amazing staff for being so kind and welcoming, especially in the face of their unfortunate situation. I wanted to take each and every one of them home with me in my suitcases!!!

Honeymoonaversary Pic Post

Hello Chubblettes! Thank you for sticking with my blog, even though I've been traveling so much that I haven't been able to update. The great thing about that, however, is that I've been building up lots of good content to share with you. First up on the back log of post topics is the 2 week trip my husband and I took in honor of 10 years together/2 years married. After we got married, we focused on trying to purchase a house rather than taking a honeymoon. So, our honeymoon did come, just 2 years overdue! We flew up to Seattle and rented a car to drive down the coast, visiting Olympia, Portland, San Francisco, and San Luis Obispo. It was a trip full of site seeing, visiting family, eating, and shopping. I even had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful fatties along the way! For each city's images, click on the thumbnail to see it larger on my Flickr. Let's start with Seattle.

Seattle
We'd never visited this city and was wonderfully surprised with its offerings. We stayed in Capitol Hill and mostly kept our wanderings within walking distance from our hotel. Here we spent countless hours in our in room hot tub, ate the greatest cupcakes ever made, and visited a private goth club. It was a little cold for my lightweight jacket, but our Ohio blood helped us maintain. We left with full bellies and the most amazing All Saint's Necklace that will appear in many following photos.

We stopped here on our way to Portland because I wanted to see the town and indulge in a little Riot Grrl nostalgia. We had amazing calzones, found an adorable gift stop, and had skully mochas at Burial Grounds. Short and brief, it was still a beautiful town with the most amazing fall foliage I think I've ever seen.

Portland:
Portland was both a honeymoon stop + a family visit, as we spent the first half with my sister in law and her boyfriend. It also fell on Halloween, so we got all dressed up and went to Dante's for fire dancing gogo girls, cocktails, and freakshow delights! My husband and I were classic monsters, choosing Frankenstein's Monster and a Mummy, respectively. I loved my mummy costume, though I think I could perfect it for future use. This was also the only spot on our trip where I had easy access to plus size gear in the form of Fat Fancy and Savvy Plus! Both had amazingly friendly staffs who were positive, kind, and very knowledgeable. I snapped some pics of Fat Fancy, thanks to one of the co-owners, Annie, who was super amazing and has a killer Miss Piggy Collection. Fat Fancy photos get their own lil' section in this write up:

At Savvy Plus, I was in a bit of a rush to get to other plans to capture photos, but I did score a fabulous velvet blazer and knee high black velvet Dr Martens! These will start appearing in OOTDs very soon. I did not get to visit Size Queen while I was there, but I met the owner/designer, Bertha Pearl, at Re/Dress last month and I highly recommend visiting her shop too! While in Portland, we had our 2 year wedding anniversary and celebrated with fabulous Italian food. We stayed at the Jupiter Inn, which has to be one of the most overrated hotels in history. DO NOT recommend.

San Francisco:
We spent most of our time here hanging out with my sister + brother in law and our nephew, so we didn't really snap any photos suitable for this blog. We did do some serious damage at Five and Diamond, an amazing steampunky, tribal belly dance type store. I purchase leather bow-clad sock garters which will DEFINITELY be shared on here soon. On our way out, we stopped by the Winchester Mystery House, which is INCREDIBLE, but did not allow photos, sadly.

Madonna Inn/San Luis Obispo:
I had been told by so many people since moving to California 7 years ago that I needed to visit the Madonna Inn that I lost count. Turns out: they were right! We choose the "Merry" room (part of a 3 room series called Merry Go and Round), primarily because it has pink sparkly walls. Upon checking in, we were greeted with Happy Anniversary balloons and champagne! Their customer service is top notch and everything they use is so pink...it's a little like heaven. We spent a full day exploring the grounds, including their gift shops, amazing pool + spa area, and multiple restaurants. They serve pink sugar for your coffee in little shakers and a rainbow array of water goblets at each table. For our dinner, we were given free pink champagne cake for our celebration and it is fantastic! I seriously recommend that if you have the opportunity you should at least visit this place. It's incredible and was a wonderful end to our trip.

We had a wonderful time, but 2 weeks is a long time to be away from our pets and my business. When we got home, I had 7 days to prepare Domino Dollhouse's collections for the Re/Dress NYC Indie+ event. Which will be my next blog post...stay tuned!

Jet Settin' Part 2

I'm heading out in a few hours to attend my first vending event (and fashion show!) for Domino Dollhouse at the Re/Dress party this weekend. I'm a huge mix of emotions, from incredibly excited the for the adventure I'm about to take, to fear for the turnout, to sadness for Re/Dress closing. Yesterday, my husband and I got some very scary news that make this event all the more important to us (no, no, I am not pregnant). We will be totally fine, but emotions and stresses are running high!

I just ask that if you love my blog, my shop, or simply want plus size designers + shops to thrive, just take the time to throw up a link to the event, share a link on Facebook, tweet about it, write the details on your naked body and take a picture, whatever! Whether you can make it or not, if you love plus size fashion, help out Re/Dress and ALL of the designers who are coming so that we can keep pushing boundaries and giving everyone the options that they deserve.

OOTD: Tim Burton

October proved to be quite busy and November isn't letting up. I just got back from a 2 week trip down the west coast for my anniversary (10 years together, 2 years married), full of shopping, visiting, + eating. I did a pretty good job of documenting our adventures, so stay tuned for some fun snaps! Right before we left, Joe and I headed to LACMA in Beverly Hills for the Tim Burton art exhibit. It was so, so amazing and while they did not allow photography inside, there were some choice areas to take pictures. And thus, I present a Tim Burton-y OOTD, complete with my new green hair.

One of my dear friends, Eddie Debarr, joined forces with Project Runway alumni Johnny Sakalis to form the fashion powerhouse Debakalis. Their debut presentation, Sirens, was a small collection of gorgeous dresses, along with leather and shell accents. It was TRULY gorgeous and enhanced by the modeling skill of my wife, Frankie! Tiers of Fall

Even though it's still in the 90's here in Southern Cali, my favorite season is approaching and I cannot wait to get back into my jackets + long sleeves! My taste/style hasn't changed very much, but there was one clear categorization became apparent: price. So I have separate my fall wish list into $, $$, and $$$. Thanks to Jeffrey Campbell, $$ has a shoe addendum...finally some Lita's WITHOUT a brown sole and/or busted upper. Also, I've include some goodies I recent bought as well to get a full visual of my fall fashion plan. I think it's also important to see how you can full embrace a style regardless of price. Enough chit chat, onto the goods!

What are you loving this fall? As I hope I demonstrated above, I'm all about drapey layers, HUGE rings, oilslick patents, leopard print, and occult imagery.

Halloween Costumes: Backwards!

So, this year for Halloween my husband and I are celebrating 2 years married and 10 years together by taking a trip down the west coast. We'll be in Portland for Halloween and I don't mind shelling out some dough for a fabulous costume! However, I'd still like to get my moneys worth...so I propose a plan! I'm going to pick out a few fabulous dresses and go backwards. I'm going to post the front runners and maybe my Chubblettes can help me out with figuring out which one can be transformed (with accessories) to the most fabulous Halloween costume!!

A few quick restrictions:
1. I cannot wear heels for long periods of time and be happy about it. Must go with wedges, flats, or boots!
2. It's gonna be chilly...some kinda jacket might have to be worn with it for periods of time.
3. I'm just never EVER gonna dress as anything that lives in the ocean. I leave that to my ONLY sea friend, Jessica.

Review: Fatphrocks Wingz

A few weeks ago, Fatphrocks approached me about reviewing some of their Wingz, a shrug product that can be worn over or under your garments to add a easy sleeve. I opted for the Black Cowl Sleeve Wingz, as they would mix well with most of my wardrobe.

I love the cute and versatility of these wingz...I prefer to use them over sheer blouses, as seen in my photo, but underneath would be a great way to extend your wardrobe into winter. They are incredibly comfy and have just the right amount of volume in the sleeve. My only complaint is that the fabric is a little cheap for my tastes...but only a little bit. Also: considering they run only 14.99 GBP, they are extremely affordable. I got these in a Size 2 (I'm a 24/26) and I could have fit into the Size 1 for a snugger sleeve with no problem. I highly recommend them as a wonderful way to add versatility to your wardrobe!!

Burlesque Bingo

If you haven't heard of Burlesque Bingo, it's pretty genius. Burlesque performers shimmy and strip on a large board full of numbers...where their clothing lands is what numbers get called! My wife was asked to perform her candy number and without hesitation, I was there to support her! The evening featured overly pushy drunk audience members, belly dance and go-go interludes, mai tais, crystals, and so much more magic.

But first...here's what I wore to the event!

While my heart goes pitter-patter for certain very expensive designers, I try to make sure not to focus on completely unattainable (for most of the world, anyways) products. However, I felt extremely inspired by many pieces this week and threw caution to the wind. Here are 3 outfits that I'm feelin' right now, price be damned. While (in my opinion) there's not the "high end" plus size equivalent of McQueen, Westwood, and Betsey Johnson, that doesn't mean you can't pull a high fashion look together.

Sanrio B-day Party!

Domino Dollhouse model, Tess Munster had a birthday party a few weeks ago that was my dream come true: Sanrio themed!! Many participated in the costume theme, some chose other fabulous ways to celebrate, but all had BIG fun. I did a spin on Kuromi (the goth-est of all the Sanrio world, of course), but sadly failed to get any full length images. Here are some party shots, taken at Tiki Ti (coconut cocktails!) and the Bigfoot Lodge, both in LA.

I really love a leopard print. This cami from Forever 21 combines my love of leopard and sheer blouses in one perfect summer top. Their sizing can be very small + inconsistent, but this one fits great, despite the fact that I traditionally wear a 4X top. These shoes are also a new fav! I've been looking for a long time for a cutesy black flat that is amazingly comfortable. My wife showed me these beauties at Target for just $17.99 and they proved to be just the thing.

NYC: Eat, Eat, Eat

This past week was spent in NYC with my bestie, celebrating his 30th birthday. I kept joking with my husband that I was going to Eat, Pray, Love my way through NYC...then would quickly modify it to Eat, Eat, Eat. Since I'm happily married and not religious, it seems like the best conclusion. And if you asked my camera, you'd think that's exactly what I did. Since it was excruciatingly hot, I was constantly sweaty and greasy haired. HOT. Coincidentally, I really only dug it out when the food came out, thus the pictures are heavily nosh related...don't continue if you are hungry =) All images are available on my Flickr, so feel free to click them for larger views.

Here are my visit highlights:

- Chelsea Market
This "food concourse" as it's called is really just what I'd call a hipster food mall. Regardless, it was had a ridiculous number of fun/interesting food options. We visited twice and on the first visit it was pouring rain outside, so we holed up in the lobby until we decided what to do. It was here that Natasha Bedingfield told me she liked my eye make up in a weird turn of events. Welcome to NYC, I suppose!

- Rockbar
For my first night out in NYC, we headed to Rockbar for Beareoke. It was quite an evening, filled with dogs, priests, and my hiding my eyes to avoid penis flashes. My friend sang a song with said dog + priest and you can watch it here.

- Re/Dress
We headed out for my first trip to Brooklyn to visit Big Girl Mecca, aka: Re/Dress. Knowing full well that I had a 52lb bag, ALREADY over the limit to get back on the plane, there wasn't going to be a lot of shopping. I grabbed these two zines and button, as they were easily popped in my carry on and made great plane reading! The lovely girl who checked us out was a vision in purple and ridiculous sweet. It's an incredibly shop with an amazing vibe...not to be missed if you are in the area, for sure!

- Momofuku Milk Bar
This adorable little treat shop was out of everything we'd originally came in for, so we settled for these 3 cookies: Corn Cookie, Compost Cookie, and Corn Flake/Marshmellow Cookie. Settled, we did not as they were the most amazing cookies I'd ever eaten!!! Seriously, Momofuku, LA branch soon?

- S'Mac
As the world's pickiest vegetarian, I had to expand on my food selections and discovered and underdevloped love of Grilled Cheese and Mac/Cheese. Foods, for sure, that you learn to love as a kid, but I just never did. Making up for lost time, we headed to S'Mac, a Mac and Cheese restaurant. The only bad thing: there's like 4 other flavors I wanted to try and, of course, only had room for the 1.

- Malatesta
Not much to say about this restaurant other than it was cute, we sat outside in the rain, and I ate some delish spinach gnocchi.

- Savage Beauty/Alexander McQueen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art This was my #1 must see thing this visit to New York. After waiting 45 minutes, we entered to see amazing cubbies filled with Alexander McQueen's amazing creations. The music and sets were dark and lushly decorated and you can really get up close to see just how amazing his pieces are. I loved the little clip on button that you get to gain entrance into the exhibit (see above).

- Miss Van show at Jonathan Levine Gallery
Before heading to the airport, we made a quick jaunt over to see Miss Van's show to check out her latest offering, Bailarinas. I wanted bunny masks and cropped capes after seeing her amazing artwork.

- Brunch at Il Bastardo, followed by a tipsy tour of the city
This day was a little bit of a blur...not gonna lie.

Additional favs of the trip: the unstoppable draw of delivery.com, how you can accidentally walk 4 miles by just going about your day, the new Gaga complementing the strolls, falling asleep whilst girl-talking with Aaron, getting to know all of Aaron's good friends, Harumphry (as picture above),, and the best part...

Spending 6 glorious birthday filled days with my best friend since Freshman year of high school!!

My shop, Domino Dollhouse, got this amazing dress last week and it took about 15 hours for me to run up to my office to pillage one for myself. My bright, floral personality took over (as well as the rising temps) and I popped on this ensemble to run some errands. I can already tell this dress will be a summer staple of mine! It's super comfy, cute, and lightweight. I also fell in LOVE with these jelly sandals...they have little gold bows up the toe strap...tres adorable! Sorry for the grump face in the photos...me and the sunlight don't always get along.

So, I can't be the only one who experiences this. When I purchase a flowy top that is made for sizes S-L, it fits me so much better than about 85% of plus size tops (of any style). Cheap Monday makes my favorite tops and Betsey's nighties (some of which ARE plus size, but more like juniors plus) are superb. I also recently added wishlists on my blog for some of good "straight" size shops not only to keep track of my favorites, but to also demonstrate the type of clothing that works* for all bodies.

Now, some of my favorite pieces come from brands that I have the potential to sell at my store, Domino Dollhouse. They carry oversized crop tops, flowy blouses, and billowing dresses that not only could work for plus sizes, I've proved it by trying them on. My point is to ask: would you appreciate a plus size store that carried standard sizes that were PRE-TESTED to work for larger bodies? I'd love to be able to carry a variety of edge-y clothing, but there just isn't the selection out there for sizes 1X-4X. What are your thoughts?

*I define works as can physically get on the body, not what looks "flattering" in some narrow minded sense of the word. I do not choose to wear body con, but that doesn't mean everyone else can't. And also: maybe some day I will.

I loved this ASOS Dress from the moment in came out...black and long with padded space shoulders? YES. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out a way to wear it that felt like me. Que up last Friday night: our friends hit us up to go to Bunker last minute and I was searching for something new to wear. After layering and unlayering various pieces, I settled on adding a high-waisted skirt with DIY-ed suspenders over my ASOS dress and I was finally in full on love with my dress.

I hope some of your recall and frankly: roll call of all those fabulous ladies that actually worked at pre-pink Torrid store (THIS GIRL)! When my girl and make up vixen Natasha needed more Drag examples for her portfolio for a job interview, we rallied the troops and banged out a full on beauty shoot in just 2 days. Dubbed the "House of Herses", inspired by both Paris is Burning and Ru Paul's Drag Race (small hint: the interview was for one of his shows =)), Greg, Frankie and I modeled our own garb and got beautified by Ms Natasha. Time for a fresh, new segment on Chubble Bubble: LINKLETTES! Okay, it's not an idea that reinvents the wheel. But, I've been trying to tap into more creative energies now that I am solely responsible for designing pieces for Domino Dollhouse. After an invigorating chat with my gal Frankie, I definitely wanted to follow suite with her blog and create weekly posts cultivating things that week that have tickled my fancy. I'm hoping that this will serve as a spark to my creative juices whenever I'm feeling stumped...and I sincerely hope that it entertains my chubblettes in the process!

My favorite elements were the lace print wigs, mesh print fabrics, the 2nd half's employee model explosion (chubby girls and gay boys make everything better), the floral printed combat boots (particularly the turquoise pair), and the Betsey/Patricia Field dance party explosion at the end. I was crazy about her pony tail and her absurd egg. I'm a huge fan of Mugler, Sci-Fi, and latex so I was in heaven. Many will shit-talk her over the top performances and "stunts", but the theatrics and artistic ridiculousness are frankly the ONLY reason I watched the Grammys at all. - Sopes and Potato Tacos from El Camino Real.
So, growing up in white-ass Cincinnati, Ohio, I know VERY little about Mexican Food. Actually, up until recently, I knew very little about food that didn't involve pizza or pasta. My switch to Vegetarian life required me to expand my palate, so now I have Indian food, Ramen, and Mexican food under my belt. Long story short: Frankie took me here and now I dream of eating these.

So, if you read my twitter, you may have read that due to some back issues, I haven't been leaving the couch/office chair much. One of those "my heating pad is my best friend" kinda weeks. I was delighted when I woke up this past Wednesday without any pain. Hallelujah! This meant that I was, of course, chomping at the bit to get out of the house come weekend time.

Friday night we got word that two of our friends were coming up from San Diego to hit up Killing Spree at Medusa Lounge. It was a hipster-y goth kinda night, featuring bands like Adult. and New Order...and frankly, lots of others whom I just didn't know off hand. There were many giggles and butt wiggles, all in all ending in a good night.

Before hand, my husband snapped some pictures of my 'fit. Anybody sick of my Dr Martens and Beth Ditto jacket? I promise I have tons of other clothes...these are just my go-to comfy dancing duds.

Domino Dollhouse Photoshoot

This past Sunday, I got together with some of my favorite lady friends to shoot some of the accessories that Domino Dollhouse carries. I think it's important that my dolls see them in action. I called on my favorite make up artist Natasha and my wife Frankie, mistress of styling and hair, to create some fun shots. My good friend Eva, who is a freakin' bombshell as you can see, came armed with her photographer husband, Jon, and we got to WORK. My mom and sister visited us in our new home and much shopping + eating ensued. Here are some highlights from last Friday - Tuesday.

- The theme of the trip was I Love You, Man. This is my sister and I re-creating the moment when Paul Rudd asks Jason Segel to be his best man. Latres on the Menjay.
- FINALLY got our wedding photo album (yes, we got married on Halloween '09)

- Played a Nautical-themed round of Mini Golf

- Did an immense amount of shopping. $15 Betsey table at her outlet, 25% clearance at Converse, and some additional Betsey/Harajuku Lovers jewelry. Also: got some more Xmas gifts from my Mom, in the form of some Evans goodies. There are more things, but the list makes me dizzy...happily dizzy

- Ate a mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwich...where the "cookies" were mint macaroons at Milk. BOOM. (this was my sister's treat).

- Exchanged Hellos with Mario Lopez. He proceeded to talk to his handler about the "girl in the polka dot dress" aka me...the rest of the story we will never know.

- Spent a lovely lunch celebrating MLK Day at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles
- Saw Tron and <3ed it
- Ate many veggie dogs

- Drank a Thai Coconut...it tasted...odd. And the man said "edible flesh" to me, so perhaps that changed my opinion

- Mom bought Marc Jacobs sunglasses and is modeling them in front of the Rose Bowl

We had tons of fun and I'm super grateful to my sister Robin for taking so many good photos =)

OOTD: The Grove

My mother and sister came to visit, so we spent many days out and about. So, I decided that I just had to take the Classic Doll Dress out for a stroll. On top of being INCREDIBLY comfy, it is kinda insanely cute. I opted for a hot pink belt, rather than the black satin sash to add some pop. To keep it all in theme, I threw on the Beth Ditto domino leggings and my current favorite sunglasses, the Candy Glam Sunglasses in Blackberry. I do have to say: I wore a 22 in this dress, while I'm usually a 24 or 26, so buy a size down!

I've tried to keep the Domino Dollhouse ads to a minimum, but we just got some new items that I'm so excited about. And the best news? Both the Birthday Bash Dress and the Bow Out Skirt are available in standard plus sizes! The dress is available in 16-28 and the skirt is available in 1X-4X.

I've always loved Barbie. She's controversial, for sure, but her myriad of clothing options and her undeniable glamour kept me coming back for more. After digging through countless images for inspiration for my upcoming collection for Domino Dollhouse, I couldn't help but revive my own love for the classic doll.

So, somehow this outfit seems inappropriate for seeing the movie Black Swan, but the tights are new and I couldn't wait any longer. This outfit may also seem out of sorts for my usual OOTDs, and that may be true. But, as you know, I'm a a HUGE fan of Betsey Johnson. So while 95% of my closet is black and moody, I have some pieces that reminiscent (if not straight up hers themselves) of her iconic collections. So, with that in mind, I hope you enjoy my brightly-toned departure from all black.

Throw in this moisturizer from Trader Joe's and the Oatfix fresh face mask (also by Lush, but only available in the store) and my skin is suppppppppper happy right now. Full disclosure: there's a SLIGHT filter on the pics, but it honestly doesn't change the skin texture at all.

Goals for 2011

Last year, I focused on finding our first home and starting my online plus size boutique. Mission Accomplished! These are such HUGE steps in my life that I was unsure where to go from there. This year will mark my last in my 20's, so I'm sure it will be a big year. After taking a Women and Aging class in college (my 19 year old self and mostly over 40 year old ladies), I realized early that getting older is NOT a bad thing. As with any new stage in life, there are good and bad things...so I'm not particularly freaking out about it. That being said, I would still like to make this 29th year a big celebration of youth, coupled with my more adult-y tendencies.

For serious or silly, here are my goals for 2011!

* Paint All of the Interior of Our House - The remaining brown walls make me cringe. Before the end of this year, I WILL vanquish that awful color.
* Make 80% of Domino Dollhouse stock My Own Designs - This is already underway, but on a very small scale...I hope to no longer be at the hands of the sad Plus Size wholesale companies anymore!
* Plant a Veggie Garden - Okay, so a very select garden, but I want fresh basil and tomatoes at the ready.

* Purchase a Rainbow Quartz Ring
* Take a Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Class
* Go on a Honeymoon - A real one. And preferably out of the country.
* Buy a pair of COMFY black docs - I know ya'll gotta be sick of those Pewter ones all the time
* Create a Domino Dollhouse lookbook
* Do OOTDs Several Times a Week - and get more of my "daily" wear, not just going out ensembles

A week and a half ago, Frankie and I attended Le Serpent Rouge's performance in LA. If you are unfamiliar I suggest you watch this beautifulness.
